How the lab works

Method

Every calculator input either cites a dated public source or stays empty. This page is the formula sheet. It is not veterinary advice and not an insurance quote.

Daily energy (NRC / AAFCO)

Body weight in pounds is converted with the international pound: kg = lb × 0.45359237. Daily metabolizable-energy need uses NRC 2006 equations as summarized in the SciELO review of NRC and in the MSD Veterinary Manual (which also states AAFCO nutrient profiles on an ME basis and the clinical RER = 70 × BW_kg^0.75 starting point):

MSD also lists MER as a multiple of RER (neutered adult dog 1.6 × RER; neutered adult cat 1.2 × RER). v1’s engine uses the NRC 2006 coefficient forms above so the worked sheet can name one equation. Any MER is a starting point; individuals vary.

Bags per year

kg/day = MER / (kcal per kg of dry food). kg/year = kg/day × 365. Bags/year = kg/year / bag_kg. Bag size is a packing input, not a price. Food dollars = bags/year × bag price only when you type a local price.

12-year TCO split

TCO = food + routine vet + insurance premium + incident reserve, each annual figure × the horizon (default 12 years). Null dollars are omitted from the sum, not replaced with an invented $0. Insurance may be toggled off. The 12-year window is a TCO horizon, not a lifespan claim.

Routine vet

Default is one visit per year at the AVMA 2024 average visit cost ($214 dogs, $138 cats), from AVMA News coverage of the 2024 Pet Ownership and Demographic Sourcebook. About 80% of visits in that survey were routine checkup or preventive care. Household annual veterinary totals ($580 dogs, $433 cats) are listed on Prices for context and are not the default line, because they mix wellness and sick care.

Insurance premium

Default on: NAPHIA 2025 State of the Industry public highlights, U.S. 2024 accident & illness average premium ($749.29 dogs, $386.47 cats). Labelled as an industry average, not a quote. Coverage is not promised. This lab does not name a best carrier.

Incident reserve

Empty in v1. NAPHIA publishes outlier claim amounts, not a typical emergency bill. Type a local savings target if you want that line in the total.

Breed weights

Adult ranges come from fetched AKC official standards or, where the standard has no pounds, the AKC Breed Weight Chart (April 26, 2023), Wikipedia breed pages, CFA, or PetMD — never from invented numbers. Beagle pounds are not taken from the AKC chart’s 15–13 lb row, which tracks the 13-inch and 15-inch height varieties.
